Emilia Lajunen (5-string fiddle, nyckelharpa, kontrabasharpa, voice)
Emilia Lajunen (born 1979) is a well-known professional Finnish folk musician, known for her personal, strong, and modern style of playing the violin. Her style of playing claims its origins in archaic heritage and fiddler music.
Lajunen plays 5-string violin, nyckelharpa and kontrabasharpa and sings, intensively present on stage, connecting collective tradition and personal interpretation. Her solo music consists of Finnish polskas, archaic herding tunes, ancient kantele music and epic ballads, all adapted to Lajunen’s contemporary style.
Emilia Lajunen graduated as Master of Music (MuM) from the Sibelius Academy in 2007 as Doctor of Music (MuT) in 2023. In addition to her career as a performing artist Lajunen teaches in the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department. Lajunen has twice placed first in the distinguished Konsta Jylhä Competition, and experienced success in international folk music competitions.
Her solo album Turquoise Bicycle was released in 2012. The second solo album with Eero Grundström Deep in the Dregs: Legacy of Deceased was released on 2023 by Nordic Notes
Emilia Lajunen´s solo project, ’Emilia Lajunen Fixed’, was launched in the Sibelius Academy’s prestigious concert series in April 2010. ” The first concert” in Sibelius Academy was with great guest musicians Eero Grundström (harmonium), Ville Urponen (organ), Filippo Gambetta (accordion) and Mika Mylläri (trumpet). After that Lajunen has continued solo project for example doing Emilia Lajunen Bike Tour with journalist Kare Eskola during the summer 2015.
